General Information about Greenway
1.1.Background
1.2.Aims and future plans
Our aim is development. Development on a local level by bringing in new ideas, manual labor, education and also financial support. And development on a personal level where all people involved are learning by doing, work wise and lifestyle wise. In the work everybody will have to find their own way without someone explaining every step. The lifestyle will show that with initiative, interest, open minds, hard work and fun we do not need so many things we always thought we needed to be happy. Besides the many local communities and NGO’s we work with by the placements of volunteers (camps and individually, long and short term) we are working on the set up of several permanent Greenway locations from where all activities will be organized. International groups within local communities where development is the goal. Educational development, whereas the local community can study in (alternative) schools, social development in establishing a kind of clubhouse where creative activities are organized and thoughts can be shared on all subjects. Financial support, by stimulating and helping with the set up of all kinds of economical activities, depending on the situation. And all this in a way that is as less damaging for the environment as possible.
In almost all the work camps and placements we work together with NGO’s throughout the country. By organizing the work together with these non-profit organizations we support their work. We help with the work that they are already doing and that they will continue to do after the camp. We help with new ideas and motivation, through support by showing interest in their work and lives. This will have a long-term affect instead of only bringing some fun in to a village for two weeks. The NGO knows what work is important to be done and we support them in their work. Our support consists of social and financial support and bringing active volunteers from different countries that are willing to work for improvement!
1.3.Expectations
· We expect all volunteers to have red and understood this information sheet and our homepage WWW.greenwaythailand.org. Be in time and stay the entire length of the placement, SO PLEASE PLAN ALL THE PERSONAL TRAVELLING THAT IS LONGER THEN THE WEEKEND AFTER YOUR PLACEMENT, INCLUDING OTHER CAMP PARTICIPATIONS!
· Let us know your travel plans one week before the camp so we know whom to expect and pickup can be arranged.
· Realize the living conditions are many times different then at home (no warm water/air-conditioning/easy access to international phone or internet/ easy transportation at all times, bugs…etceteras)
· Besides this all volunteers should understand the aim of Greenway and realize that learning about the Thai way and the social contact is some times more important then the actual manual work. Groups can vary in amount and nationality of the participants as Greenway will always let everybody participate in their first choice. Therefore everybody should choose a project because of the interest in the subject. Volunteers coming mainly for cultural exchange and to make international friends within the group are advised to choose the Songkhla camp in our international center /home base.
· We expect all the volunteers to be open mined, leave prejudice behind and show initiative.
· Only English and Thai should be spoken when others are around, even if this people do not join in on the conversation.
· Volunteers should understand that many time will be spend with local people who do not speak (very well) English. Volunteers should make the effort in trying to communicate in basic Thai or use other ways of communicating (work, pictures, gestures, etcetera) If you try you will be amazed how good you can communicate and how quick you will learn basic Thai!
· Behavior and dress should be cultural sensitive, especially while in the village or schools: women in Thailand swim in shorts and T-shirt for example!
· Flexibility is expected from everybody as well as the realization that the Thai way of life and work is less stressed and should always be fun, now matter how hard the work is!
· Creative ideas for the work, discussions, the campsite, excursions and free time are expected to come from the group during the camp. Share your thoughts and idea’s!
· And most important: living at Greenway means you are part of a community of volunteers. Your daily enthusiasm, initiative and the will to improve (the project, the lifestyle and the learning that comes with all contacts between people) is expected. We learn by doing, only by taking initiatives and therefore sometimes making mistakes, you learn.
If a volunteer chooses the LTV placement Handicraft the volunteer will come to Greenway with a specific interest, take some time to see what are the possibilities in this project to work with this: are the needed materials available? How to bring this to the interest of people? What is my target group? What activities are good to organize? Who can help me with this?
The volunteer will not arrive and be taken to an existing Handicraft centre where he or she goes to work weaving baskets: Thai people can do this much faster and better. The volunteer should give an extra dimension BECAUSE he/she is a motivated, foreign volunteer with connections to other volunteers in different subjects, with access to information, internet, with creative ideas because he/she comes form a different background.
With this a volunteer can motivate others in keeping handicraft skills alive, bringing in new creative ideas that may stimulate they artistic development, the social development in working together in an intercultural group, as well as the financial development that may occur when this project gets ground in future
One of the most important aspects of Greenway on personal development is the learning trajectory of our Thai volunteers. More young Thais (mostly from the small villages around Greenway) come and join our project full time for a certain amount of time. In these months/ years they learn things that are new to them and different from other education in Thailand. They practice and learn about things as program planning, group leading, cultural differences, technical English, etcetera. Camp leading is one of the aspects of their education and they are learning by doing. Volunteers that join a Two week camp with Greenway should realize that the camp leader is a volunteer, a group member who will be responsible for organizing practical things such as the schedule, translation and the contact between Greenway as an organization. All the volunteers together are responsible for input, making the camp a success and having the group function as a whole. Foreign volunteers should realize they can learn everything about Thai culture and language from their Thai co-volunteer, they however should not expect to find a watertight cultural exchange information training on arrival.
1.4.General information
1.4.1. Activities
Greenway is a new, fast growing organization. To give you an (simplified but clear) idea: Our main activities are:
As we have many contacts throughout the country and we work on different subjects, we encourage everybody with specific interests (Greenway also encourages research in different areas.) to ask about the specific (unlimited!) possibilities.
1.4.2. Contact
If you want to know more you can visit our website at: www.greenwaythailand.org
To contact us please work through the partner organization in your own country of residence.
1.4.3. Costs
Greenway is a non –profit organization and does not have paid staff, only the Thai volunteers get a monthly allowance. Greenway does not have funding and has no income to cover the costs of transport, office communication, food and housing, etcetera. We work only with communities that need our support and will therefore not ask money for that! Therefore volunteers are expected to pay the underneath prices besides all their personal costs needed to come here (travel/vaccinations/etc):
A fee of US $ 150 is charged in every Greenway work camp. About 75% is used for the organization of Greenway and the set up of the home bases and community centers. The rest is used in the different camps and to help the local NGO’s and / or villages we work with throughout Thailand. This does not mean that your money strictly goes to the project that you are joining as we have work camps on different locations, with many NGO’s and with different costs and needs.
$400 is charged for all placements up too 3 months, on arrival. Before the end of 3 months there will be an evaluation and if the project is placement is considered meaningful and the volunteer would like to extend their stay $200 is paid for the next 3 months. After a total of 6 months the projects can be prolonged, up too a total stay of 1 year. There are no further costs for this.
1.4.4. Health, visa and insurance
Little health problems are expected, as Thailand is a very hygienic country. For all problems a hospital /clinic is never far. Volunteers should bring personal medicine /first aid precautions as they think needed.
For a stay up to 30 days a visa is almost never needed. However, to be sure contact the embassy in your country. When visa is needed we will help you with this. For mid and long-term volunteers Greenway will issue a letter for the Royal Thai embassy in your country of residence. Please check this in time!
All volunteers are responsible for their own insurance.
2. Camps
The previous years we organized a great amount of work camps, everything was new and many things need improvement. That is what we will be working on this year. Some camps we have stopped because they are not suitable, other camps will take place more often to create follow up. This year there will be many possibilities so that even the people that have to choose a camp in a set time schedule can choose a camp according to their own interest. In this chapter you can read about the different possibilities of camps for this year. We have many subjects and work together with many different NGO’s and therefore there should be an interesting camp for everybody.
The motivation to choose a specific camp is very important for us to avoid disappointment from the volunteer, the group but especially from the local people. Volunteers who want to do a work camp only to practice the English language or have fun in a international group will be disappointed in Greenway, as well as the other way round…
Volunteers who expect a leader who will tell them at all times what to do and when may as well be disappointed in Greenway’s approach. We realize that for some people it is important to have set schedule with practical work and firm leadership but many times we cannot offer this because we do not work this way. We see work camps as a tool to improve the situation for the people here in Thailand, not as the goal. Our main goal is not to organize only fantastic experiences for the volunteers. We do think however that the volunteers who are interested in working this way will have an unforgettable and very valuable experience.
Songkhla base camp
For the volunteers who do need more guidance in the work and free time activities we recommend the camps at our base camp in Songkhla. In these camps there are fixed working hours on the schools and many free time activities with the local youth who visit the camp every night. Also for the people interested in cultural exchange by presentations, games, cultural nights and party’s, this is the best camp to choose. Other camps demand great interest in the work and surroundings itself; flexibility and initiative to organize free time activities for the local people to join, to enjoy these camps to the fullest.
With this information we hope to make our aims clear to everybody and to prevent disappointment.
Ranot base camp
Ranot camps are good for people who do not need one specific leader and group program, for people with lots of individual initiative and those who like a personal atmosphere, this is a good camp. In Ranot the volunteer number for two-week participants is limited to 6 and the volunteers join in an existing program of community living and the setting up of a community center. The focus is on working together on the one aim: to make the center a beautiful place for people to develop themselves: by working together, living together and organizing activities for local youth together. Free time activities such as cultural parties and excursions should not be expected but organized by the participants themselves.
Takbai base camp
This year Greenway wants to start a third home base camp in Tak Bai (deep south Thailand, near the Malaysian border). . The work will be a combination of construction and maintenance work in the morning and in the afternoon educational work, start up small scale industry, start-up care elderly people (in the area), start-up care mental disabled people (in the area) work in the afternoon. For volunteers who are older then the average of volunteers (18-25) Tak Bai base camp is especially interesting. The Takbai camps are good for people who do not need one specific leader and group program. People who can work independently on the set up of a project and people who take their experience in the above subjects are especially asked to choose this camp.

NAKHON RATCHASIMA
The meeting point is at MO CHIT bus station in Bangkok; where the busses go to Nakorn Ratachima. Meeting point at the third floor in front of Dunk’n DONUTS (delicious coffee to wait…) at above date at 10 o’clock in the morning.
Traveling from Bangkok to the National Park should be paid for by the volunteers as we are using public services. It will cost about 250 Bht per person.
Important:
AT THE MEETINGPOINT NOR AT THE CAMP will there be opportunity to:
change money, use the Internet, and make international phone calls
Once you arrive at Bangkok International Airport the most convenient way to continue your travel to Bangkok downtown is of course by taxi (but take a licensed one, 50 Bht more expensive but safe), otherwise by airport bus (stops at all interesting points and guesthouse areas) or train. You may cross from the international arrival hall straight to the railway station on the other side of the highway that passes in front of the airport (There is a short corridor/bridge) accessible from the international arrival hall (look for the sign Amari Airport Hotel or ask information).
We show in this project
- international solidarity in protecting forest reserves and are, as volunteers, willing to work together with the foresters in keeping the forest clean and protected against human threats
- that we respect the social approach of the project in protecting the forest
The project will consist of two weeks working with the NGO named WildAid, working in one of the largest national parks of the Royal Forest Department Khao Yai. Although located at only 250 km from Bangkok, it still is in largely in its virgin condition. Tigers, elephants, wild bulls and many other large and smaller species of animals roam free through the forests. One week you will be working together with the foresters close to the headquarters. You will be helping them with for example making a path. During this week you can learn a lot about the park and its wildlife. See the waterfalls and the wildlife while helping the foresters with their work. The biggest threat to the national park is humans. The people living in the villages surrounding the National Park are poor and make their living of going into the forest illegally to cut the plants and kill the animals to sell on the market. The National Park has a Khao Yai Conservation Project (KYCP) that works in 3 teams;
This community outreach team organizes youth camps to teach the children about the forest and the affects of poaching. At this moment they are working actively in three villages surrounding the park. After the youth camps the foresters talked to the people in the village about their life and asked them what occupation they would like to have in stead of poaching illegally. These villages where interested in farming (Chickens, vegetables, mushrooms and insects). Just a few moths a go the project started and in each of the three villages 2 foresters where placed. These foresters will be working in the village together with the villagers for three years. By now the starting material has been bought, 4 farms are built, the villagers and foresters have been on course to learn how to farm and they are working! KYCP is investing a lot of money and work in these three villages and the project is a role model for many other national parks. It is however a difficult project. The people living in the village are pore and many of them are not interested in working, others who are do not have much knowledge about farming jet, and also the foresters are not specifically trained for this.
In one of the villages you will be spending a week as well. The most important thing that we can do there by organizing work camps on a continuous basis is to stimulate the people to work and show them it is important by coming back every time. We are interested in their project, in their village and they should be proud of it. In the last work camp we introduced compost. With pictures we showed them that their vegetable farm would be useless in a few years without compost. We introduced the idea of separating their garbage, making a compost pile and stop throwing the garbage on the floor and burning plastic on every street corner. We made posters teaching them about different kinds of garbage, what to do with it, visiting the houses to teach about this. The people in the village have never heard about things like this and will forget soon, all the work that we did there could be a waste of time if we do not organize follow up! This work camp you will be spending one week in this village where you are so welcome because of many reasons;
without you they will never have the opportunity to meet people from even outside their district, let alone from outside their country
Besides a follow up about the compost and the garbage ( teach by showing, be efficient, visit the houses, repeat, repeat..) all good ideas for improvement of the work AND the village are more then welcome and next work camps will have follow up on projects that this group will initiative. If you introduce a new idea do not be disappointed if the villagers and even the foresters do not understand at once. Realize that this is new to them and keep in mind that they want to learn about this and that you will be able to make everything clear with patience and there will be following up!
Our interest and your work (besides manual work a few hours a day) in this project also includes giving the foresters and the villagers pride in the work they are conducting; although their salaries may not be so high, we should give them pride in their job of preserving these precious forests. As such, a compliment for their efforts is very well appreciated, as well as giving the foresters and the villagers a good time with us. This is part of the project!
7:00 wake up, make and eat breakfast
9:00 work: cleaning garbage along the tracks or making trails
16:00 back at the camp: free time
18:00 make dinner
19:00 dinner
20:00 campfire, discussion, night walks, anything else organized by the group
PLEASE NOTICE THERE ARE NO PRE-ORGANIZED ACTIVITIES BY THE CAMPLEADER. ALL ACTIVITIES SHOULD BE GROUPINITIATIVE
7:00 wake up and make and eat breakfast
9:00 work in the mushroom farms
12:00 lunch and free time
14:00 work in one of the farms
16:00 free time
17:00 children activity organized by the volunteers
18:00 make dinner
19:00 dinner
20:00 campfire, discussion, dancing, anything else organized by the group
In the village “cultural presentations” are very popular. In the evenings you will be asked to sing, dance, teach games from your own culture, etc.
There will be a free time depending at the daily schedule. This time can be used for your personal activities like washing clothes, writing letters or just resting. But it also can be used building up a strong relation with the other volunteers and then again with the local people.
In the evenings there will be ample time for discussions and campfire with music. The Thais love to sing and dance and we hope that you invite the rangers you are working with to the camp in the evenings. Especially in the village the villagers will expect you to be happy, they will ask you to sing songs, show pictures, etcetera.
As the place is rather isolated we will not disturb neighbors, nor wildlife as the park is very large.
Of course there will not be any alcohol drinking during the working hours and it should be understood that alcohol use should be limited at all times. Parties may be exceptional, especially if the initiative comes from the foresters and villagers joining in. The local people we work with however are serious alcohol drinkers. Be prepared for this: behave at all times as a guest and a sample for the people you are working with. This means that you should not drink along all day with them but also not discredit them for this or display your disrespect for this openly.
The accommodation in the camp and in the village is very basic. A (Thai style) shower and toilet is there, as well as a roof over your head, but that’s it! Bring a hammock or mattress to sleep in /on and anything else of comfort that you need but please travel as light as possible. You have to be able to carry your bags to and from the accommodation.
Also the lodgings are far from the ‘outside world’ and there is neither telephone nor Internet available. Finish your business before going to the forest; preferably on the Sunday before the departure from Bangkok.
Please bring the following items:
- Sleeping bag (this time of year it is unbelievably cold during nighttimes high up in the park mountains!!!!!)
- Walking/trekking shoes and other gear
- Thin but unrevealing close for the daytime and a sweater for nighttime
- Hammock (small size, lightweight) or mattress VERY IMPORTANT
- Flashlight
- Hat against sunburn
- Medicine as you think necessary
- Mosquito repellant
- A lot of ideas on forest preservation and the education of this in a simple way
- Ideas for children games: in the village you are expected to organize this for one hour every afternoon
- Music instruments (always good for evenings at the camp)
- Pictures of people and things dear to you and good for a conversation
Before coming to the camp we expect you to have thought about the following items:
- Why is it so important to preserve the forest?
- How do you get this clear to people who are so poor and can make a great living out of this forest, located close to their houses?
- What do you think about the KAO YAI CONSERVATION PROJECT?
- How can we help in preserving the forest with the time we have?
Besides this you should realize that the accommodation is basic, there are many insects and other crawling animals…. for example leeches. Bring good shoes and long trousers, insect repellant and other items you think you need.
There are very little health problems to be expected concerning the food. Thailand has hygienic conditions and we never had any problems here before. If you are vegetarian please inform the camp leader and the cook in the village as soon as possible. Do not feel obligated to eat something against your principals. (you will not insult people if you explain polite and the only thing they expect from you is to be different…) However do not expect alternatives besides rice, vegetables and eggs as being a vegetarian is not common in this location.
The water offered in the villages and park is not bottled water. We did not have any problems with this before. If you are uncomfortable with this you should bring your own water purifier as we do not want to bring plastic into the area as they have too much of that already! Off course you can by bottled water if you prefer this. At the headquarters in the park and in the village there are small shops.
GREENWAY BACKGROUND
Greenway started its activities just about two years ago and this was done with the help from NICE in Japan and SIW in The Netherlands. The first year we organized a little under 10 camps and we had about 80 volunteers participating. This gave us courage and we intended to cooperate with many socially active NGO's in Thailand in the fields of (alternative) education, environment, eco-tourism and nature research and also to work with socially disadvantaged groups of people. Wherever we see a situation that can be improved by voluntary work, we intend to organize this. Last year we had 53 camps on different locations in Thailand. This year we will have approximately the same camps but with more follow up and with deeper aims. Last year the camps gave us insights in the local problems and possibilities, this year we can work on this more accurate to improve local situations by organizing camps and setting out many long-term volunteers.
The base camp an office of Greenway is in a small village nearby the city Hadyai in Songkhla province in the south of Thailand. This is the place from where all the camps throughout Thailand are organized together with the local communities there. The base camp mainly has English teaching camps, which take place every month. Besides these camps the base camp houses the office of Greenway, figures as a “clubhouse” for local youth and Greenway club members and is the home to the people living and working here as permanent residents or long term volunteers.
Living in this time of globalizations, individualism and speeding technologies we want to create a place for people where working on social, educational and environmental issues is the drive. In this developing country we want to stimulate development with the sources we have because we live in this time. By placing volunteers from outside the small world of the people living in local communities, we show interest in the work and lives of people, which encourages them. But we also hope to make people aware of the world they are living in and the possibilities of this world. We stimulate development in thinking and learning and bring practical help on this in the form of methods, situations and financial possibilities. Besides helping local communities in a practical way we have the aim to be a role model. Showing an alternative way of living in an international, social structure. This means that all people living at Greenway, even if only for two weeks, no matter in what camp and location, are expected to act in an environmental friendly, open minded and development stimulating way.
WHAT DO WE EXPECT
· We expect all volunteers to have red and understood this information sheet and our homepage www.greenway.bizland.com. Be in time and stay the entire length of the camp. Let us know your travel plans one week before the camp so pickup can be arranged. Realize the living conditions are many times different then at home (no warm water/air-conditioning/easy access to international phone or internet/ easy transportation at all times, bugs…etcetera)
· Besides this all volunteers should understand the aim of Greenway and realize that learning about the Thai way and the social contact is many times more important then the actual manual work. Groups can vary in amount and nationality of the participants as Greenway will always let everybody participate in their first choice of camp. Therefore everybody should choose a camp because of the interest in the subject. Volunteers coming mainly for cultural exchange and to make international friends within the group are advised to choose the Songkhla camp in our international center /home base. The camp leaders are mostly two people working together: someone from the host organization/village and a Greenway long term volunteer.

· Creative ideas for the work, discussions, the campsite, excursions and free time are expected to come from the group during the camp. Share your thoughts and idea’s!
FOOD & HEALTH
There are very little health problems to be expected. Thailand has hygienic conditions and we will prepare the food at the camp. A small hospital is never far away in case of emergencies. The food at the home bases is all vegetarian. While staying with the local people vegetarians should inform the camp leader as soon as possible so arrangements will be made. However vegetarians should not expect several different dishes besides egg and vegetables as it is not so common to eat vegetarian in the villages. In general Thai food means three rice meals a day with some side dishes. Normally only water is provided (and in our camps thee and coffee). The food will not be very spicy as everybody knows that that can cause some problems for foreigners: but the peppers are never far away for those who want to adjust to the Thai lifestyle completely!
Alcohol and cigarette use should be limited at all times.
FEE
A fee of US $ 150 (or the Thai currency equivalent for this changing from 6000/7000 Bath) is charged in every Greenway work camp and should be brought with you to the meeting point: BANKS ARE CLOSED ON SUNDAYS! $75 is used for the organization of Greenway. $75 is used in the different camps and to help the local NGO’s and / or villages we work with throughout Thailand. This does not mean that your money strictly goes to the project that you are joining as we have work camps on different locations, with many NGO’s and with different costs and needs. Greenway is a non -profit organization and does not have paid staff.
Food, boarding and transportation are included on weekdays. In the weekend cost will be shared among participants when we decide on excursions together or have meals somewhere else then the base camp. Off course we will help to keep the costs as low as possible. Alcohol is never paid by Greenway.
